New energy-efficient contemporary house gets durable and solar panel-friendly roof

A modern, energy efficient house demands a perfectly finished roof. This new-build contemporary family home in Destelbergen (Belgium) was built on the same spot as the previous building, which was demolished. Architectural firm 2PK Architecten created this sleek, two-level detached house that combines understated volumes, a choice of premium materials and refined details.

Fully adhered + ballasted

The house has a total roof area of about 250 m², which is divided between the roof of the upper floor and the (wider) ground floor. Our RubberGard EPDM roofing membrane was used on both levels, fully adhered and then ballasted with gravel in a similar light shade as the facing bricks. This provides the residents with a beautiful view from the upper floor, while also improving the roof’s wind resistance.

During the installation, special attention was paid to the detailing around the penetrations, skylights and the eaves to ensure a performant solution for decades to come.

BEN house

Since 2021, all new construction in Belgium must meet BEN “Bijna-EnergieNeutraal” (Nearly Energy Neutral) requirements. A BEN house is designed to use very little energy for heating, cooling, ventilation, and hot water. It must meet strict energy-performance standards, including a low energy score, high-quality insulation, airtight construction, and the use of renewable energy sources such as solar panels or heat pumps.

About 48 solar panels were installed on the top roof of the house in Destelbergen, contributing to its nearly energy-neutral character. RubberGard EPDM offers a lightweight yet strong and durable foundation for solar roof installations. It has excellent weathering performance, first-class mechanical resistance and can withstand extreme temperature fluctuations.
