United States Postal Service Distribution Center
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
The United States Postal Services processing and distribution center in Harrisburg, Pa., had an ballasted EPDM roof that was approximately 18 years old and was experiencing leaking. David M. Maines Associates, Inc., a full-service commercial roofing contractor based in Lewistown, Pa., had a 30-person roofing crew working on this expansive re-roofing project for a year. The 348,300-square-foot roof required a new Elevate RubberGard EPDM Roofing System roof. However, it was not a simple tear-off and reroof project due to multiple factors. Extensive protective measures were put in place to shield both the people and high-tech equipment located inside the facility. In addition, 4.5-inch phenolic insulation was installed underneath the old roof and it needed to be removed. Due to the failure of the old roofing system, numerous areas of the roof deck required remediation, and in some instances, replacement.Once the deck was prepared for the new roof, two layers of 2.5-inch Elevate ISO 95+ GL insulation boards, as well as Tapered ISO 95+ GL Insulation in some areas, were installed. A fully-adhered 60-mil RubberGard EPDM Roofing System was selected for the entire facility, including the main structure and various loading areas that branch out from either side of it. Once completed, the project was approved for a 20-year Elevate Red Shield Warranty.
