Stephen T. Mather High School
Chicago, Illinois
Established in 1959, Stephen T. Mather High School in Chicago, Ill., completed a two year, $30 million renovation in 2010. As part of the renovation, Mather High School replaced its existing 120,000-square-foot SBS polymer modified bitumen roof system. A new Elevate MB base sheet was mechanically attached to the deck followed by two plies of Type 4 felt. Tapered Elevate ISO 95+ GL polyiso insulation was installed at ¼:12 slope followed by ½-inch Elevate FiberTop Wood Fiberboard and two plies of Type 6 felt, all set in hot asphalt. The system was topped with a standard Elevate SBS FR white cap sheet.
The building also includes six new roof sections totaling 10,000 square feet of additional modified bitumen roofing system. The new 8,000-square-foot library features Elevate SBS FR UltraWhite cap sheets. These highly reflective, cool roofing solutions were chosen to help the school’s new library achieve a LEED® Silver rating. The roofing contractor mechanically attached 5/8-inch DensDeck Prime insulation cover board to the metal deck, and set two plies of Type 4 fiberglass felt in hot asphalt as a vapor barrier. Over the vapor barrier, two layers of 2.5-inch tapered Elevate ISO 95+ GL polyiso insulation were installed in hot asphalt. The contractor then attached a layer of ½-inch Elevate FiberTop Wood Fiberboard and set two plies of Type 6 felt in hot asphalt. Elevate SBS FR UltraWhite cap sheet was installed as the top layer.
The roof was installed by A-1 Roofing Company and is protected by a Elevate Red Shield 20-year Warranty.
